IMI is looking for a Bilingual Senior Accountant to join an established accounting firm in Ottawa. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for client financial plans and policies, accounting practices, the conduct of Company relationships with clients and the financial community, the maintenance of client fiscal records, advising on tax matters and the preparation of financial reports. This position involves supervision over general accounting, internal auditing, cost accounting, and budgetary controls. 

Knowledge and experience with full cycle accounting including use of QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online software packages is necessary.  Data input, supplier payments, bank and credit card account reconciliation, payroll processing, government remittances and client correspondence are the core responsibilities of this role.  Meeting payroll and government filing deadlines is mandatory and requires organizational skills and utmost responsibility towards client obligations.


Employment and labor guidelines need to be referenced and adhered to while preparing payroll.  Use of direct deposit and other app systems is also used by the candidate and requires attention and accuracy.


The position is full time and the candidate may be required to work overtime during the peak season and month ends.  The candidate is proficient with technology and experienced with MS Office software, particularly Excel and will be required to work in a fast pace environment.  The candidate will be provided 1 month of training to become familiar with client files.

The candidate will assist the maintenance of year end files, build work-papers and cross reference and review year end checklists to ensure files have been completely finalized with accuracy while ensuring that the internal file controls are met.

Auditing of books of account (including but not limited to preparing checks, coding and posting invoices, preparing deposits, journal entries, reconciliations, petty cash).

Oversee issuing of checks / payment of invoices.

Prepare monthly / quarterly financial statements for clients.

Maintain investment schedules, oversee cash flow requirements and communications with clients.

Maintain accounts and relations with clients.

Oversee internal system of handling funds.

Maintain year-end working papers and spreadsheets, and assist with preparation for any audits or independent reviews with support from the accounting manager.

Complete monthly reconciliation for all accounts.

Assist in maintaining policy and procedure documentation for complex financial and accounting issues.

Provide technical support (including software updates, trouble-shooting and back-ups).

Maintain current knowledge of regulatory changes and impacts on the organization's books of account.

Maintain an accurate and complete trail of supporting documentation for all financial and bookkeeping activities.

Maintain up-to-date, complete and systematic filing system to support book-keeping and financial records.

Develop, analyze and interpret statistical and accounting information in order to appraise operating results in terms of profitability, performance against budget, and other matters bearing on the fiscal soundness and operating effectiveness of client’s organizations.

Responsible for evaluating the performance of direct reports in the Accounting Department. This individual recommends training requirements, has the duty to keep the staff at the highest level of skill necessary to meet company needs and objectives, and may recommend that personnel be hired or removed from their care.

Coordinate and direct the preparation of the budget and financial forecasts, institute and maintain other planning and control procedures (including the cost accounting system), and analyze and report variances.

Is responsible for tax planning and compliance with Federal, Provincial and local corporate, payroll, and other applicable taxes.

Furnish internal reports, revise and update reports to be more useful and efficient, and furnish external reports as necessary.

Determine depreciation rates to apply to capitalized items and advise clients on desirable operational adjustments due to tax revisions.

The Senior Accountant has the final responsibility for providing effective financial controls for the organization.

Required Qualifications :


Minimum Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related field required.

CPA designation is an asset.

5+ years of experience in financial management.

Excellent computer skills.

Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.

General understanding of computerized accounting systems.

Excellent working knowledge of MS Word, QuickBooks, QuickBooks Online and Excel.

Accuracy and attention to detail while working under tight deadlines.
